In Western fairy tales, the dragon \u2013 a complex and global symbol &#8211; is chthonic, destructive and mean and represents the unexpressed, the undifferentiated, the hidden and chaos. The struggle of the hero with the dragon symbolizes the trials one must go through in order to win and conquer the \u201ctreasures\u201d of inner knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>In many fairy tales, the dragon, after having burnt the earth and destroyed crops and spread fear, traps people in their houses and eats those who dare face him directly. The houses become a \u201csafe\u201d refuge.<\/p>\n<p>In the time of the pandemic we are experiencing a universal world-wide \u201cfairy tale\u201d which \u2013 contrary to the well-known \u201cFairy tale without a name\u201d by P. Delta &#8211; \u00a0is a fairy tale where fear, ignorance, chaos, the speed of events and the violent awareness of our vulnerability, where death is not something projected into the distant future. The future seems to have suddenly become our possible present and lockdown the only possible choice.<\/p>\n<p>In this new condition a number of things change in Psychotherapy, since communication, which also refers to treatment sessions, is now carried out on the internet, from a distance, with the screen as a mediator. The framework, with its familiar appearance in terms of meaning and its symbolic value, changes, contact becomes one-dimensional and what is perceived are the eyes, the expressions, the faces, against a background. The important is that the basic information channel is missing: information coming from the body and self-regulation which happens unconsciously, when two bodies interact, either creating a sense of familiarity and safety or not.<\/p>\n<p>The whole theory of primary and secondary intersubjectivity talks about how bodily interaction (mother-child) affects the abilities of interpersonal understanding and the perception of the communication intentions of the other person (Trevarthen, Aitken 1997). And only when they are able to share possible emotional narratives, using repeated harmonies, is the capability to maintain an inter-coordinated narrative over time enhanced (Malloch &amp; Trevarthen 2009).<\/p>\n<p>Regarding communication through Skype and the other online platforms, a big number of articles have been written, with analyses and evaluations of the specific procedure. I believe that, in this particular conjuncture, it was a useful necessary condition. Is it however, a sufficient condition, as we say in Physics, since it hinges on matters of the Theory of Psychotherapy? This is a question for exploring.<\/p>\n<p>In the present conjuncture we share a common traumatic experience with the people under treatment, and as a patient said \u201cwe are all in the same boat\u201d and another one \u201cwe are all watching the same play\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I am choosing to present some phrases and thoughts from the online sessions during lockdown, which belong in part to patients and in part to the therapist.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The agonizing attempt for satisfaction, food, exercise, movies, performances, tours.<\/li>\n<li>Everything is offered, you do not have to look for it, like food you swallow without chewing.<\/li>\n<li>The generous repetitiveness of identical information<\/li>\n<li>Stuffing<\/li>\n<li>What you must remember<\/li>\n<li>Uniformity<\/li>\n<li>Compulsions<\/li>\n<li>External control<\/li>\n<li>The omnipotence of the enemy<\/li>\n<li>The helpless victim<\/li>\n<li>The bipole of perpetrator \u2013 victim<\/li>\n<li>You can hurt others<\/li>\n<li>When you are close you bring something destructive<\/li>\n<li>Guilt<\/li>\n<li>External control<\/li>\n<li>Saviors<\/li>\n<li>The fear of death<\/li>\n<li>The lockdown<\/li>\n<li>Agony<\/li>\n<li>Repetition<\/li>\n<li>Routine<\/li>\n<li>The uncontrollable<\/li>\n<li>Impatience<\/li>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<li>Anger<\/li>\n<li>Violence<\/li>\n<li>I do not choose<\/li>\n<li>I am trapped<\/li>\n<li>I do not take the opportunity<\/li>\n<li>My timing does not exist, it is the timing of the condition<\/li>\n<li>Whatever comes from outside governs the inside<\/li>\n<li>A protective shell which hides life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we consider all this process as an answer to the losses and fear, it is easy to distinguish the five stages of grief according to E. Kubler Ross (Denial, Anger, Bargaining,<\/p>\n<p>Depression, Acceptance).<\/p>\n<p>I do not believe that all patients or all therapists passed through all stages or experienced the same intensity, nor of course that they are all at the same point in the course.<\/p>\n<p>Let me take the denial stage which was expressed in various ways, such as the explosion of needs, quick satisfaction, excessive planning etc. I think that on a first level it was a healthy way to confront the situation. But permanence in actions and not in lived experience may transform the experience into a parenthesis without psycho-emotional benefit. Excessive idealization of the situation \u2013 which is suddenly an opportunity for learning, seeking knowledge and wisdom \u2013 can also be seen as denial.<\/p>\n<p>Through therapists\u2019 supervision I have sometimes found excessive zeal which, with the exception of crisis situations, was an attempt on the part of therapists to put disorder and agony quickly in order by encouraging, proposing, foreseeing, educating and not mainly containing, but sometimes projecting and balancing, their own agonies. The zeal is different from zest in relations and this way of seeing things is a form of denial.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the stage of anger. Anger about others is only a part of an internal process; some transfer it, expressing it to all directions, while the psychologically vulnerable persons act it out, transforming it into verbal and physical violence towards themselves or towards their family members. In this way, a real visible immediate problem appears.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the stage of depression can be experienced by some as sadness which prepares the persons for the next day or by others as a reactive depression which will accompany them also in the time after lockdown and which will be intensified when it is accompanied by real visible losses, e.g. of work or financial difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>The intensity of the lived experience, the size of the problems which arose in the dense time of the 45-day quarantine as well as the possibilities of reading and managing them are differentiated. \u00a0In this way, it seems that a common experience does not also constitute a common or similar lived experience. The lived experience is the result of the personality structure and the level of maturity and function before stress-inducing situations.<\/p>\n<p>Some quarantine rules, like checks, prohibitions, punishments, were experienced excessively by many people who were trapped in claustrophobic or agoraphobic dilemmas and in excessive paranoid fears or anxieties. Many people, in order to avoid tension, stress or the psychic pain of catastrophic impulses or to bear ambivalence, resorted beyond the refuge of their home to psychological retreats.<\/p>\n<p>Psychological retreats, according to J. Steiner, are a psychological space of delusionary safety which protects from stresses coming from the experience of the two positions of psyche development according to M. Klein (schizoid &#8211; paranoid &amp; depressive). They offer a temporary way out or escape, tranquility and temporary protection from the stress-inducing factor. Although Steiner studied this psychologically organized structure \u2013 which he places between the two positions &#8211; with borderline patients, the psychological retreats concern us all, since throughout life there is an oscillation between the development positions, resulting in a different balance at each time. Psychological retreats are an alibi for inner safety and the narcissistic satisfaction they offer is a great resistance to any movement and change. Only if we help patients in Psychotherapy to express the painful feelings which keep them trapped in their psychological retreats, can they arise psychologically from them.<\/p>\n<p>Often, the experience of the transitional space according to Winnicott (which during the specific period was abused as a concept), is confused with the concept of the psychological retreats. But they are two completely different conditions which we met in the lockdown period. I believe that in the transitional space one is free to resort, to immerse oneself in order to create.<\/p>\n<p>You are obliged to remain in the psychological retreat out of a need to feel safe, as a way out of the fears of internal movement towards a direction. It is an organization of the psyche used in a defensive way to provide relief, it has however no relation to creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Having wandered like this in the lockdown period I want to say that we are now in the transitional period where we can predict, but do not know in essence the size of changes in the post-covid period. \u00a0The emergence in many levels I believe should be done using the \u201cdiver\u2019s rules\u201d. Slowly and steadily. I hope that as therapists we may have the time to re-examine our value system and to work on our abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the fairy tale at the beginning of this text, we know that the story is completed when the hero, using his abilities with intelligence, overpowers the blind force of the dragon.<\/p>\n<p>The word for \u201cdragon\u201d in Greek comes from the ancient Greek word \u201c<em>\u03b4\u03ad\u03c1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em> (\u201cderkome\u201d) which means to see clearly, to be perspicacious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bibliography<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malloch, S.
