During the pandemic and the lockdown, which are now part of our common experience, events rushed upon us, and we were forced to come face to face with our vulnerability. The way in which we think about ourselves, our relationships, intimacy, and our connection to others has changed.<\/p>\n
In this new context, therapy sessions of all psychotherapy approaches had to go online, mediated by a screen that turns three-dimensional contact into a two-dimensional one.<\/p>\n
For dramatherapy these changes seemed abrupt, given that a central point of its theory is that body language is a main information channel, as well as that the connection with a body that is fully alive and in constant dialogue with its inner part can express a specific reality. However, the heart of dramatherapy as a therapeutic intervention is interaction with other people in the context of common action giving the freedom of choice and exploration. This no longer seemed feasible.<\/p>\n
Unexpectedly, we had to respond to chaos swiftly. Sue Jennings used to say \u201cwhen in chaos stay with the chaos and listen to the chaos\u201d. On the contrary, what we saw was a great effort to promptly put the chaos in order, as workshops, training, guidelines, courses popped up.<\/p>\n
However, what we need to do is to listen to our new circumstances, experience them and define our online dramatherapeutic Identity. I believe that we should take into account four main parameters. The context, the contract, the body and the action.<\/p>\n
The dramatherapist\u2019s care for the context \u2013 a suitable place, the material, the preparation \u2013 creates a holding space, an environment of trust and openness and sends a message of care. Online, the sense of context changes, the client is in their own place and there is no guarantee that there is no one else listening or that no one is going to barge in.<\/p>\n
I ask my clients to find a quiet and as empty as possible room and to ensure their privacy to the extent possible. I ask them to walk through the room, so that I can get an idea of the space. It is helpful to have a piece of cloth or a small rug be spread out at the beginning of the session and removed when the session ends to symbolically mark the action space. Some materials are also needed, such as paper, paint, clay, pieces of cloth, while, the clients should be ready to use objects from the room creatively. The process for the creation of the creative context applies to both individual and group sessions. What is different in groups is that the context is more expanded. Such a context shifts responsibility to the client, asking them to display more \u201cgrown-up\u201d skills, which for certain clients may be an advantage while for others a disadvantage. All the above are added to the rules of the existing contract.<\/p>\n
All projective techniques can be easily applied online, in individual and group sessions alike. The same applies for simple somatic exercises regarding breath, relaxation, the sense of the body, etc. We can also create little rituals with movement to begin or end a session, or a creative exploration. To be honest, I really miss group games.<\/p>\n
The greatest problem for the application of Dramatherapy online is that essentially this is a bodiless environment. By that I do not mean that the body is absent. We do continue to feel our body and the clients feel theirs. We can ask them to tell us where they are feeling tension or send it from their head to their toe. What is missing is the perception of the other through our senses and mainly through touch and smell, which both affect the sense of bonding and intimacy. Isn\u2019t it weird that this virus in the way it spreads seems to be attacking the senses?<\/p>\n
Moreover, we know that body-to-body interaction is necessary not only in group actions in dramatherapy, but also for every relationship in a group. We regulate each other through our body interaction. I believe it is impossible to have a group action in a group session, and in individual sessions we stick to movement improvisations and to monologues. What is also lost in a group session is eye contact, because if we look from one participant to the other, they cannot understand that we are looking at them.<\/p>\n
It is not easy for a dramatherapist to participate in a group action and I believe this applies to individual sessions as well, because they lose their role as the process witness. If they too disappear from the screen, then who will be there to hold the context?<\/p>\n
In our online work, less so in individual sessions, of which some of us might have had an experience before the lockdown, but more so in group sessions, there is always something important that is lost. There is a difficulty to let ourselves go with the flow and trust our senses, the absence of the possibility of interaction that relates to co-creation and to the whole, of the interactive creation of something new.<\/p>\n
As a dramatherapist, no matter how much as I use myself in an adaptive way, in this circumstance there have been many times I had to strain myself to see, and that not in order to understand. And there were many times that I had to narrow the possibilities provided by my work, and this in itself gives rise to an imperceptible feeling of sadness.<\/p>\n
